Hyperbolas Outline (2 Days)
1. Start by checking off HW sheets for ellipses (go over a few questions)
2. Character Development: Book and Bible (Q and A)
3. Hand out Notes Sheets
4. Go over the definitions and let the students write them down
5. Go over formulas
6. Take a problem very slow with them without a transformation
--> Identify the difference between the three conics discussed
7. Do one more with a transformation
8. Have them try one on their homework with each
9. Find how to find the equation of a hyperbola
10. Go over questions on the homework and different ways to solve for the missing material
11. Not Top Ten Video?
12. Review Game
--> Give the students information for a hyperbola
-->They must graph the hyperbola and fill in all the definitions above
-->First one to get it, receives 10 points
-->Timer is put on other students for one minute
-->If they get it, then they get 5 points
-->Most points gets to cross one off on the test
(We could also make things interesting by making it a whole class activity where you must get it right together and a new person must explain different parts of how they found the hyperbola.)

Homework: Hyperbola Worksheet
Due on Wednesday/Thursday
Vocabulary
foci -- same definition as ellipse
(equal distance from the curve within the center)
Equation can be viewed below
transverse axis -- described as the first variable in the top left of the equation; can be vertical (y is first) or horizontal (x is first) depending on what is first (look below)
conjugate axis -- opposite of transverse axis; second part of the equation following the negative
asymptote -- diagonals of the rectangle of the axis
center -- center of the hyperbola (can be transformed)
vertices -- same as transverse
a -- comes from the equation (sq root of bottom); transverse
b -- comes from the equation (2nd, sq root); conjugate
c -- foci of the hyperbola
(a squared plus b squared = c squared)
